In 2020 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) inaugurated a new multipurpose center in Chicago's Morgan Park neighborhood, transforming an abandoned retail store into a 130,000 square foot employee workspace and a community-focused Blue Door Neighborhood Center (BDNC). The BDNC aims to improve community health by addressing physical, mental, environmental, and social factors. Approximately 100 employees have already begun working at the site, with plans to employ up to 550 in various roles to support BCBSIL members and network providers. Additionally, BCBSIL is expanding its presence in Chicago neighborhoods with a third BDNC in South Lawndale's Little Village neighborhood later in the year and office space in the Mural Park development in Pilsen in 2021. The centers offer no-cost programming, including fitness classes and chronic health condition management education.
